Untreated congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) in adults is very rare. The efficacy of surgical release in such cases is unclear. We experienced a rare case of untreated left CMT in a 58-year-old woman who presents cosmetic deformity of head tilt, prominent tight fibrous bands of the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM), facial asymmetry, and functional restriction of neck motion. She underwent bipolar release of the SCM. Surgical release led to cosmetic and functional improvements in the neck without serious complications, even though facial asymmetry did not improve. Even adult CMT with longstanding deformity may obtain the benefit of surgery. |
